A FAVOURED REGION
Welcome to one of the world’s oldest wineproducing regions! Thanks to the special climate and the great diversity of the soils, the Leithaberg is certainly one of the most multifaceted and versatile places in the world where wine is grown. Lake Neusiedl with its warm winds and the cooling influence exerted by the hills of the Leitha Range shape the character of the region’s finest wines, with their noble fruit, freshness, finesse and vitality.
ESTERHÁZY: INNOVATION IS A TRADITION
As patrons of architecture and the arts as well as art collectors, princes of the House of Esterházy shaped the cultural and political life of Central Europe for centuries. Viticulture of course played a pivotal role from the very beginning. Pinot Noir vines were first introduced here, followed by other members of the Pinot family, since then among the most significant grape varieties in Burgenland. Today, our estate is the most modern winery in Austria.
WINE – GOOD TO GO
Along with the cultural, culinary and historical aspects of the House Esterházy, viticulture has played a central part for more than 250 years. There is hardly any other scrap of ground that offers such ideal conditions for growing grapes as our region does. Here at Esterházy, great wines are grown on ninety hectares and vinified to meet the most demanding standards, from red to white, from nobly sweet to vividly sparkling, all refreshing expressions of the region’s most typical and notable characteristics.

A NEW ‘RIED’ ON THE LEITHABERG
Our new vineyard Ried Pirichen is situated on a hilltop in the Osliper Hotter. Its name is derived from the mediaeval village of Pirchdorf, which stood at the foot of the hill from 1200–1415, halfway between Sankt Georgen and Donnerskirchen. In recent decades this first class parcel was covered with woods, but when the land was cleared, it was confirmed that this had indeed been the site of a historic vineyard. Ried Pirichen is part of the ongoing expansion of our Single Cru series of top sites in the Leithaberg DAC. We will begin planting vines here in three years; planning calls for the vineyard to produce Chardonnay and Blaufränkisch, since the site’s elevation implies that it will be a cool vineyard. The first single vineyard wines will be produced in 8–10 years, but we can already anticipate excellent results, since the site’s terroir promises extraordinary quality.
